Polytunnel by goingtothedogs on May 10th, 2009, 12:22 pm
We bought a polytunnel a couple of weeks ago, and I thought "Hey, dead easy to put up.... nothing to it..."

The first part of the job is to hammer scaffolding tubes into the ground. These are essentially the "foundations" of the polytunnel. Each length of scaffolding acts a sleeve for the main hoops of tubing which make up the "skeleton" of the tunnel.

Now I'm while fairly robustly built, I'm a bit puny when it comes to wielding a sledgehammer. It took me a full afternoon to get the tubes into the ground at just the right angle to take the hoops. Each hoop is made of of two parts, fitting together with a male/female joint. If the tubes are in the ground at the wrong angle, even slightly, the two halves of the hoops either don't come together at all, or they spring apart with a joyous sproinggggg!!!! noise and you have to start again.

Next job; get the ground sheet down. Easy...

roasting hot-dogs over a tire fire... by Char0n on August 29th, 2014, 1:59 am
there are reasons we sleep and there are lunacies that do more than glow in the dark... half of the time its about this mad mad mad mad world and the treasures burried out in the desert by the same shovels that smacked jimmy hoffa around before he ended up where ever him and the other Atlantian's ended up when the sea opened up and swallowed all that poison that we are supposed to clap to antidote...
it seems to me that smart stuff doesn't add up to much but more of the same radical 'ego centric' universal cosmic fractal score rationale that points at the scoreboard when it comes to trash and all the talk of the end of the world that always just skins our teeth... then again... maybe all those who leak off of edges into their own little corners of the world only ever must remember to wash their hands before going back to work...
i mean if the horror of the construct is so much that monstrosity of a kinetic sculpture that really shouldn't work at all... and if all of the self centered...

Loud Mouths (and Heavy Typers) by Paralith on March 28th, 2011, 4:34 pm
During my years on science forums and in the #science chatroom, I have come across a wide variety of those characters which the internets have to offer. It can be both fun and infuriating (not unlike grad school), but in the past year or so it felt like these places were inundated by people with a particular agenda. In general, I refer to them as sci-haters, but they are a fairly diverse group. There's these types:

Some of whom you can reason with, many of whom go into a toddler-esque tantrum rage at the mention that maybe they're wrong and people who have spent a lot of time studying these topics just might know better. Then there's the types who simply want to bash science and/or scientists as wrong, heartless, elitist, biased, a waste of space, etc.

I felt like I...
