Round the World to Vietnam by Anonymous on May 22nd, 2009, 7:11 pm
Hey All,

This summer, I will be working with Thomas Hales on his work to proof of the Kepler conjecture. He'll be based out of Hanoi, Vietnam.

Now, sadly University of Pittsburg, which is arranging the research program this summer, couldn't arrange for a flight to Vietnam for me from Amsterdam, since it was out of budget. They could only manage a flight out of the US. However, I had a frequent flyer ticket out of Amsterdam to Logan Airport, so I'll be flying to the US before flying to Vietnam.

This flight plan is kind of crazy:
Schiphol, Amsterdam, NL -> O'Hare, Chicago, IL
O'Hare, Chicago, IL -> Logan, Boston, MA
Logan, Boston, MA -> JFK Intl Airport, New York, NY
JFK Intl Airport, New York, NY -> Hong Kong Intl. Airport, Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong Intl. Airport, Hong Kong, China -> Noi Bai, Hanoi, Vietnam

And here's the path on google maps... estimated around 13,700 miles......

Letters from the cave by alpha_3 on May 20th, 2009, 11:22 am
--I am very curious to see why my post in metaphysics has been transfered to Odds and Ends.

--It looks like this is not very polically correct to move posts like this.

--But I trust the administration of this site because they have tolerated much more "uncomprhensible" posts of mine than this one.

--Let's see if they finally move it again in its natural place.

--That does not mean that I am going to folllow any 'line".

Emotional Intelligence: Science and Myth by Anonymous on May 17th, 2009, 1:56 am
Emotional Intelligence: Science and Myth
by Gerald Matthews, Moshe Zeidner, and Richard D. Roberts; Cambridge, Massachusetts, MIT Press, 2002, 736 pages,

So what do the authors conclude from their exhaustive efforts? Is emotional intelligence something new? Is it distinct from existing measures of individual difference? Or is it old wine in new bottles? They conclude with a cautious pessimism about the utility of emotional intelligence. They find serious psychometric limitations with all published measures of emotional intelligence. They are not optimistic about the prospects for developing a coherent, empirically supported theory of emotional intelligence. They suggest that the applied benefits of the construct are limited, especially in the clinical arena, "where the principle of taking emotions seriously is already ingrained." Although they believe that the popularity of emotional intelligence seems to be based more on myth than on science, they urge readers not...
