Delhi Brocken Spectre

Postby toucana on October 15th, 2018, 3:24 pm

Canadian rock singer Bryan Adams has posted an unusual Instagram picture taken onstage showing his own shadow projected onto the haze and dusty air above the audience at a gig in Delhi.

The post said the music veteran had "never seen" the phenomenon before, describing it as "magical".

The Indian capital is the sixth worst place in the world for pollution, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) data. Conditions in and around Delhi have deteriorated this week and are currently categorised as "poor".

The optical effect is known as a 'Brocken Spectre', and is named after a peak called the Brocken in the Harz mountain range in Germany where it was first observed and described by Johann Silberschlag in 1780.

The effect depends on strong back-lighting, and the presence of haze or fog in front of the viewer.
