Physicist may have manipulated pure nothingness

I am really having trouble understanding this article.

What I do understand is that scientist may have found a way to not destroy a quantum system letting them get around Heisenberg uncertainty principle. After that I am a confused by pretty much the rest of the article.

Can someone explain the article? Also I really don't understand virtual particles. What are they? I think they are not real particles. Where do they go after disappear?



Please keep your answers simple because I am easily confused and don't know a lot about physics.
