Trump Cuts WHC Dinner

Postby toucana on February 25th, 2017, 8:37 pm

Donald Trump has announced on Twitter that he will not be attending the annual White House Correspondents dinner on 29 April this year.

The annual WHC dinner is a major social occasion and media event intended to celebrate the First Amendment and the best political journalism of the year. Donald Trump will become the first POTUS not to attend the event since Ronald Reagan failed to attend because he was still recuperating after being shot in an attempted assassination on 30 March 1981.

President Trump's decision not to attend comes on the heels of recent vituperative attacks by him on the press as "enemies of the people", and a controversial decision by his Press officer Sean Spicer to exclude a number of major news outlets including the Washington Post , NYT and the BBC from a White House press briefing on Friday afternoon.

One suggestion doing the rounds on Twitter is that the WHC should invite the comedian Alec Baldwin who impersonates Trump on SNL in his place.

Surely Baldwin is too mature, authoritative and dignified to substitute for Trump.

Good. The press should be holding the prez accountable and not hobnobbing and yukking it up with him. I remember when Obama joked about drone-killing guys who date his daughters. Pretty funny from a guy who had a weekly kill list meeting to decide what American citizen should be assassinated by the government without due process. Liberals didn't mind because you know, Obama.

If the press is finally in an adversary relationship with the president, that's exactly where they should be and exactly where they weren't the last eight years.

Trump, for his part, is an idiot. He should show up and laugh along with the jokes. Show a little humility. Not his style. Thin skinned and looking to fight with everyone. Not a promising start to his administration.

Judging from this gem in the Dominican newspaper El Nacional, a sizeable number of overseas correspondents already think that Alec Baldwin *is* Donald Trump.

Funny,

I noticed in the news that Trump only allowed members of the press, that give favorable Trump reviews, to his recent press conference.

Makes perfect sense to exclude those that don't like you from hearing what you have to say.

Naw, a President of the US wouldn't try to control freedom of speech, would he?

And some people still think Trump has the potential of being a good president. This is scary.

I couldn't decide whether to deposit this here or in ""Laughter ... ". But I decided to dump it here without comment.

"President Trump invited the Pope for lunch on his mega yacht, the Pope accepted and during lunch, a puff of wind blew the Pontiff's hat off, right into the water.

It floated off about 50 feet, then the wind died down and it just floated in place.

The crew and the secret service were scrambling to launch a boat to go get it, when Trump waved them off, saying "Never mind, boys, I'll get it."

The Donald climbed over the side of the yacht, walked on the water to the hat, picked it up, walked back on the water, climbed onto the yacht, and handed the Pope his hat.
The crew was speechless. The security team and the Pope's entourage were speechless. No one knew what to say, not even the Pope.

But that afternoon, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN all knew how to cover the story. Their banner headlines read,

"TRUMP CAN'T SWIM” "
