A major terrorist incident has taken place outside the houses of parliament in Westminster London.

London ambulance services say they were summoned at 2:40pm to an incident on Westminster bridge in which a 4x4 vehicle had mounted the pavement and mowed down up to dozen pedestrians.

Armed police activated emergency procedures shortly afterwards when the vehicle crashed into railings outside parliament and a man armed with a knife stabbed a policeman at the gates and ran inside. The attacker was shot multiple times and the houses of parliament have been placed under lockdown. The prime minister was evacuated at high speed in a car by her security staff.

Media reports say that one woman died in the Westminster bridge incident and that a number of others have catastrophic injuries. One female pedestrian was knocked into the river but was rescued alive according to the port of London authority.

The policeman stabbed just inside the gates of the palace of Westminster is said to have subsequently died, while the attacker who stabbed him has been removed in an ambulance seriously injured but still alive according to latest reports

The acting chief of the metropolitan police Craig Mackie was actually in Westminster when the attack began according to police sources who say they are treating the attack as a terrorist incident.

Large parts of central London are still in lock-down, including tourists who are trapped in the gondola cars of the giant 'London Eye' Ferris wheel located just across the Westminster bridge which was stopped immediately when the attack started.

I feel sorry for the woman - but this does not sound like a "major" terrorist incident. I was expecting to read 10's if not 100's or 1000's of casualties!

The incident is still ongoing. Police are are said to be searching for an accomplice who has not yet been arrested and are also dealing with reports of a suspicious package outside parliament.

Although the reported civilian casualty toll is thankfully low compared to what happened in Nice last summer and in the attack on the christmas market in Berlin last December, any attack on the houses of parliament especially one that involved the death of a Westminster police protection officer will always be regarded by the security services here as a major incident.

Four people are now confirmed dead, including the stabbed policeman and the attacker who was shot. Another twenty people are being treated in hospital. A number of them are reported to have serious injuries.

Two female pedestrians died on Westminster bridge. One was knocked under the wheels of a London bus, and another died in the river - (yet another was rescued alive from the water).

The casualties on the Westminster bridge included three young female schoolchildren from the Saint-Joseph high school in Concarneau, Brittany, according to French foreign ministry sources.

Fox News once again came up with an imbecilic 'expert' who claimed that the "whole of London had been shut down" by yesterday's attack.

Large numbers of people living in London took to social media to mock the claims by Fox correspondent Walid Phares, and to post reams of pictures suggesting otherwise.

While I know we all hate the thoughts of any kind of violence for any reasons, my own thoughts were that if three people had been shot by some deranged office worker in the US "going postal" who was then shot by police, this incident probably wouldn't even have been reported beyond local news. How many killings are there a year in the US with three or more casualties? This is only news because the killer claimed to be Muslim.

And what if your deranged worker had driven at high speed over the length of the Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington DC, mowing down 40 people in their wake, then crashed their 4x4 vehicle into the gates of #1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, stabbed a security guard to death, then run inside the grounds waving a large knife, and gotten within 45 yards of the president before being taken down ?

Location as they say, is everything.
