House candidate favoring Trumpcare assaults reporter

The GOP candidate for Montana's lone House seat, when asked about the possibility of 23 million Americans losing coverage under the latest Trumpcare plan, body-slammed the Guardian reporter to the ground and punched him.

Montana usually votes strongly Republican, but it looks like this race will be closer than usual.

reminds me of this other recent news.

A belligerent man in a Trump hat was kicked off a flight as a crowd chanted: ‘Lock him up!’

In the case of the Montana incident, there has been no hint of an apology of any description from the GOP candidate Greg Gianforte (why do they always sound like Mafiosi ?).

Instead his spokesperson put out a statement on Gianforte's behalf which tried to portray the Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs as the aggressor, a statement that was instantly contradicted and exposed as a lie both by the audio recording from Ben Jacob's dictaphone and by a witness statement from Fox News reporter Alicia Acuna who was setting up a segment with her own camera crew nearby and saw the beating happen right in front of her.

As an extra value added slur, the PR statement on Gianforte's behalf included the gratuitous observation that Jacobs was a "liberal reporter'. Apparently this is what inquisitive reporters in Montana should expect if they ask GOP candidates any awkward questions in public about Trumpcare.

GOP candidate Greg Gianforte has now been charged with misdemeanour assault (the reporter's injuries weren't quite severe enough by Montana standards to justify a felony assault charge it seems). He has also lost the endorsements of two local newspapers who had previously backed him.

The unlikely beneficiary of this imbroglio is the Democrat candidate Rob Quist who is described as a "populist progressive cowboy poet and bluegrass singer" and one who favours legalising marijuana among other things. Can the citizens of Montana expect to be "High On The Range " in the near future you wonder ?

From the Wikipedia entry on Montana GOP candidate Greg Gianforte
Gianforte is a believer in Young Earth creationism, the belief that the Earth is less than 10,000 years old. He donated $1.5 million to the Glendive Dinosaur and Fossil Museum in Glendive, Montana, a creationist museum which teaches visitors that evolution is false, the Earth is about 6,000-6,400 years old, that dinosaurs were on the Ark and that they likely died out 4,300 years ago during the flood described in the Book of Genesis

Sounds like a slam-dunk for the House Committee on Science Space and Technology if he gets in. His views align well with those of the current chair Lamar S. Smith (Texas) who is a Christian Scientist and climate change denier who has consistently tried to cut NASA's earth sciences budget.

Ugh. He won, with 50% of the vote to Quist's 44%. Over 50% of Montanans took advantage of the early voting option, and had cast their votes before the assault. Montana is not one of the 7 US states that allow you to retract a vote, alas. Local election commissioners received many calls from early voters, asking if they could retract or change their votes. Don't know if that would have changed the outcome. Some Montanans would not see punching an East Coast liberal Jew as anything to object to. (Jacobs is from Baltimore)

That said, Gianforte's having twice the campaigns funds of Quist might revive the debate about campaign finance reform and the Citizens United decision of the SCOTUS.

Looking at all his political positions on Wikipedia, the guy is a typical nightmare of the American people. I will never understand the desire people have to increase population through anti-abortion and other measures, and yet they are anti-immigration type issues. Total hypocrisy and nonsensical business thinking.

Only good thing about the politics coming out of Montana lately is being against transferring and sale of federal lands. But that doesn't stop them from transferring federal public lands (wildlife refuges) into military control for weapons testing like is happening in NV.

The good news is that voters in Montana will get to vote again as early as 2018 in the mid-terms.

Is this particular seat up for re-election at that time?

Apparently it is, from what I can recall from something I saw in a thread elsewhere.

This election was an out-of-sequence special caused by the previous incumbent Ryan Zinke accepting the post of Secretary of the interior in the new Trump administration.

You may recall that Zinke turned up on his first day in his new job dressed as cowboy, and riding a horse called 'Tonto' through the streets of Washington DC.

Yes Zinke is also against sale of federal lands.

Looks like Zinke ran in 2014 so that would make his seat term to 2018?

Also looks like the Green party filed a lawsuit so that they could run for the seat in this special election but didn't make it in.

Last Dem rep from Montana left office in 1997.
