Ten US sailors are missing after a collision between the guided missile destroyer USS John S McCain (DDG-56) and a Liberian flagged oil tanker to the east of Singapore.

According to news reports, the collision occured at around 05:24 local time (21:24 GMT on Sunday) and took place on the strait of Singapore as the USS John S McCain was preparing to enter the port of Singapore

US authorities said the destroyer sustained damage to her port side towards the aft of the vessel. The oil tanker Alnic MC sustained some damage above the waterline, but none of their crew were injured and there were no oil spills.

A large search and rescue operation is under way for the missing sailors while the USS John S Mcain is sailing under her own power to Singapore.

This is the third serious collision between US navy warships and merchant shipping in asian waters this year. The USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62) collided with a container ship off Yokusuka in June with the loss of seven sailors, and the guided missile destroyer USS Lake Champlain (CG-57) collided with a fishing vessel near South Korea in May.

The US navy recently sanctioned and removed the entire top level of command of the USS Fitzgerald during the ongoing investigation into the June collision near Japan and conceded that their seamanship had been at fault.

There will be renewed concern that yet another Arleigh-Burke class guided missile destroyer has been involved in such a serious collision.

There is also concern about the response of the Trump adminstration to the latest incident. The governement *still* does not have a Navy secretary in post.
