Hurricane Harvey Will Be a Major Disaster

The Governor of Texas Gregg Abbot has issued a warning that Hurricane Harvey will be a major disaster and has appealed for more federal aid.

The category 3 tropical storm is expected to make landfall near Corpus Christi either late on Friday, or early Saturday morning bringing up to 35 inches of rain, wind speeds of 130 mph, and a possible twelve foot storm surge.

The combination of heavy rain, "life-threatening" storm surges, flooding and strong winds could leave wide swaths of South Texas "uninhabitable for weeks or months," the National Weather Service in Houston said. Such daunting language hasn't been seen by CNN's experts since Hurricane Katrina, which left more than 1,800 people dead in 2005.

Of course, Trump has already cut - or just proposed cutting? I don't know whether that passed - FEMA's budget as the number and severity of climate emergencies increase, but at least there is someone at the helm who doesn't [openly] advocate dismantling the agency. Small mercies.

Remember when partisan politics wasn't quite so vicious? Thanks, professor, for giving more ammunition to the Right to use in their anti-Academia rants!

NYT is dropping its paywall for hurricane Harvey stories this week.

Article looks at longterm problems with having so much of the U.S. refining and chemical industries concentrated in hurricane country.

All I heard about Chump was him bragging about his crowd size and how famous people are getting from this hurricane. I had to look up the video to see it to believe it. I know it was just a cut clip but yup, he seemed super excited about the disaster and how wonderful it was to be there.

Plus another guy added to the list of people that got themselves fired over Trump -- yet he just keeps on...

So, um, how are people in Texas feeling about the Big Byoootiful Wall?
.... Maybe it should be built on pontoons.... added advantage of being able to sail it to wherever the next lot of refugees will come from...
I should think they'd prefer levees, blankets and temporary housing....

Seriously, though. Didn't Bush Jr. place FEMA under Homeland Security? And didn't Trump increase DHS budget at the same time he decreased FEMA's?
So, presumably, some or all of that money could be diverted to disaster relief at the discretion of acting Secretary Duke? (I take it this one of the 100... 112... growing number of unfilled permanent posts.) If there really is any money...?
Meanwhile, rescue and relief people are working their tails off, with no backup.
Sad.

This is a like a microcosmic display of our global problems with a fossil-fuel driven society.

And here is what happens when the champions of minimalist regulation prevail....

Houston's been getting the same lesson from Mother Nature for over a century, and she keeps forgetting.

NYT articles on Houston's crisis are still free, no paywall.
