Carter Page Speaking In Moscow - July 2016

Over the past half year, I have had the privilege to serve as an informal advisor to the staff of the Kremlin in preparation for their Presidency of the G-20 Summit next month, where energy issues will be a prominent point on the agenda,” (Carter Page - letter August 25th 2013)

The above comment is from a letter three years ago by Carter Page to an academic publisher. It has attracted some attention given Page’s significant role in the Devin Nunes ‘memo’ that is currently being used by the White House in an effort to discredit the investigation by Special counsel Robert Mueller.

Carter Page first approached the Trump campaign team In December 2015 with a recommendation from the son-in-law of Richard Nixon, Ed Cox who was Chairman of the New York State Republican party.

“At the time anyone who came to us with a pulse, a resumé and seemed legit would be welcomed” a campaign official later told the Washington Post.

Trump staff ran a quick Google search to check out the newcomer. He seemed to have the right qualifications - head of an energy investment firm, MBA from New York University and a PhD from London SOAS (School of Oriental & African Studies).

Previously, the 44 year old had been a graduate of the US Naval Academy, and had worked for Merryl Lynch.

If the Trump staff had taken a slightly longer look at Page however, they might have discovered this as well :

Carter Page who lived in Moscow for three years first turned up on the radar of US intelligence in 2008 as the subject of a confidential telegram to the State Department from the US Embassy in Turkmenistan. They described how Page had met local government officials during a conference in Ashgabat and had been seeking employment on a 1$billion oil development contract citing previous work with Russian energy giant Gazprom.

In January 2013, Carter Page came to the attention of US counter-intelligence once again, this time in connection with his relationships to three Russians masquerading as businessmen in New York.

All three of these Russians were spies working for the SVR (Слу́жба вне́шней разве́дки) which is Russia’s foreign espionage service. Victor Pordobnyy the senior member of the group held diplomatic cover but fled the USA when the spy-ring was exposed and was subsequently charged in absentia two years later in January 2015 with working as a Russian intelligence agent under diplomatic cover as an attache to the Russian mission at the UN.

Court records include a transcript of a conversation where Podobnyy talks about recruiting someone named “Male-1” by making “empty promises” about “connections in the [Russian] Trade Representation.” (Page now acknowledges that he was Male-1.) - “I think he is an idiot,” Pobodnyy says in the transcript.

The third member of the spy-ring Evegny Buryakov who was working as an ‘illegal’ without any diplomatic cover was arrested and subsequently deported back to Russia.

On 21 March 2016, Donald Trump was interviewed by the Washington Post who asked him about his foreign policy team. Trump named two people in particular - Carter Page, and George Papadapolous, who recently pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI over his contacts with Russian intelligence proxies.

Cute thread title. What's amusing to me is that Nunez has admitted he has never seen the FISA warrant applications himself.

It would seem blindingly obvious that the FBI had been watching Page for a few years before going to the FISC, and that their application would be based on multiple sources of information.

Nunes has succeeded only in making the right wing of the party look even stupider, in a congressional election year. I thank him heartily!

There were unconfirmed reports in May 2017 that congressman Devin Nunes had his TS/SCI clearances revoked after his extraordinary antics a month before, when he went behind the backs of all his colleagues on the HIC to share highly classified information with President Trump in person.

That particular story has never been independently verified, but if Nunes really did lose his upper level TS/SCI (Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information) clearances, then it might help explain his apparent inability to read highly classified FISC documentation that other members of the 'Gang of Eight' clearly can peruse.
