New type of water ice found on Earth

Previous work has shown that ice-VII can be synthesized in the lab, but the new study revealed that small amounts of the material can also form naturally here on Earth, thanks to the peculiar properties of diamonds.

Yes, I thought of Vonnegut, too.

Thanks to the incompressibility of solid water, you can have at least 7 different molecular reconfigurations in response to pressure. I like how the article explains this so clearly. If the molecules won't "scooch" together, then they have to reorient. And how remarkable that diamond inclusions will preserve high-pressure configurations. That is so cool!

I have a few small diamonds lurking around, and a couple over a carat in the US. I was wondering if the ice inclusions might alter the properties of the diamond compared with an "ordinary" diamond. I dropped a hot diamond into some liquid oxygen and it turned into CO2 once. It wasn't an accident, but a demonstration.

What is the significance of this new ice I wonder. I'm trying to think of applications, and how to synthesize it for use in cryogenic laser applications maybe.

The hardness of the ice on the Moh scale would also be quite interesting I think.
