Iran - The Shell game

“You don’t need to be able to read Farsi to understand what this means” thundered Prime minister Netenyahu menancingly in his recent presentation about Iran’s nuclear weapon program with his finger pointing to a diagram label highlighted in red. - Which was perfectly true in a way, because the word he was pointing to قلب‎ Qalb happens to be an Arabic word meaning ‘heart’ or core’, in this instance a fissile core of Uranium 235 - (The label below it چشمه Chashmat means ‘fountain’ and refers to the innermost Polonium/Beryllium initiator core of an implosion array).

The problem with Netenyahu’s presentation is that most of what he had to say has been known for over a decade to the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) and other statutory bodies engaged in NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty) monitoring. The full account of what the IAEA discovered can be found in the very detailed report it issued back in 2011

https://www.iaea.org/sites/default/files/gov2011-65.pdf

When Netenyahu complains that Iran lied about its nuclear weapons research program and that the whole JCPoA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) was “built on lies”, he was simply making a statement of the thunderingly obvious - of course it was built on polite evasions of uncomfortable truths (hint - it’s called ‘diplomacy’). The entire point was that all the original signatories to the Iran sanctions deal knew that Iran had been deceptive about its nuclear program and would probably continue to be so, and they factored that complication into the basic structure of the entire agreement, and all the monitoring apparatus that was built on top of it.

“The deal was put in place exactly because there was no trust between the parties, otherwise we would not have required a nuclear deal to be put in place,” the European Union said in a statement.

The nuclear deal is “not based on assumptions of good faith or trust — it is based on concrete commitments, verification mechanisms and a very strict monitoring of facts, done by the IAEA,” the EU said.

A statement issued earlier today by the British government re-emphasised the same point:
According to the IAEA, Iran continues to abide by the restrictions set out by the JCPoA, in line with its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The world is a safer place as a result. Therefore we, the E3, will remain parties to the JCPoA. Our governments remain committed to ensuring the agreement is upheld, and will work with all the remaining parties to the deal to ensure this remains the case.

So what are Netenyahu and Trump really up to ? In part it’s a perfect meeting of two uniquely vindictive minds. Netenyahu is still seething with resentment that Israel was excluded from the Iran sanctions negotiations by President Obama in 2015, while Donald Trump is absolutely determined to torch and destroy every landmark achievement of his predecessor in office, largely out of spite.

A second factor is that both politicians are facing unique political difficulties in their own countries because both of them are facing criminal investigations for various forms of criminal corruption. Netenyahu’s grandstanding Powerpoint presentation on Iran’s nuclear secrets was carefully timed to pre-empt a parliamentary motion of no confidence that was due to be presented in the Israeli Knesset - a motion that was withdrawn when Netenyahu called an emergency cabinet meeting and announced that he woud be addressing the nation.

Donald Trump of course is facing problems over the ongoing criminal probe into collusion between the Russian government and his 2016 presidential election campaign. Any distractions are welcome.

Right on cue came news last night that Robert Mueller’s investigators detained and interrogated a Russian oligarch called Viktor Vekselberg earlier this year in connection with a payment of $500,000 to Michael Cohen, the personal attorney of Donald Trump shortly after the 2016 election.

The details were confirmed and amplified by documents released last night by the law firm of Michael Avenatti APC which is representing Stormy Daniels in her civil suit against Donald Trump. The same documents also exposed secret payments by AT&T to Essential Consultants LLC, a shell company controlled by Michael Cohen.

http://money.cnn.com/2018/05/08/media/att-michael-cohen-consulting-payments/index.html

A document released by Avenatti stated that "Essential received $200,000 in four separate payments of $50,000 in late 2017 and early 2018 from AT&T." The payments occurred at a time when AT&T was hoping to deflect DOJ opposition to a planned merger with Time-Warner.

AT&T said that the payments were for “Insights into understanding the new administration”.

Vekselberg has cleverly channeled his influence money through Americans, so as to steer around the emoluments clause of our Constitution. The corruption dots are pretty easy to connect, though. If most of the GOP hadn't sold off their souls, we'd be looking at impeachment by now.

The immediate impact is more likely to be seen in a tougher approach in Syria, where Iranian troops (sent to aid the government side in the civil war) are bombed by the Israelis practically every week. So far Iran has not responded to these attacks in any way, but it could start by shooting a couple of those Israeli planes down, and then the fat would hit the fire.

For several years now, the main foreign policy goal of America’s two main allies in the Middle East, Israel and Syria, has been to draw the United States into a war with Iran. Therefore they have to provide the hawks in the Trump administration (Pompeo, Bolton, et al.) with a plausible pretext for starting the war, and a couple of downed Israeli planes would do nicely.

If you look at US campaigns in the ME, you'll find we've been fighting Israels wars. They have a modus operandi. They provoke attacks to enable them to continue to be professional victims. Netanyahu is praying for the US to attack Iran for him.
It's just business as usual really. I believe Israel should live within its borders, so does the UN. But nobody ever enforces UN Security council rulings on Israel.
