Shoko Asahara - Leader of Aum Shinrikyo Cult

Shoko Asahara (aka - Chizuo Matsumoto) has been executed according to Japanese press sources.

He was the leader of an apocalyptic death-cult called Aum Shinrikyo (Supreme Truth) that carried out attacks on the Tokyo underground railway system with bags of Sarin nerve toxin on 20 March 1995. Thirteen people died in the attacks and many more were injured.

The cult made several other attempts to release hydrogen cyanide at various railway stations in the months afterwards, before the police closed in on the cult.

Twelve other cult leaders were also sentenced to death along with their leader and another six were sentenced to life imprisonment. The convicted men have spent decades on death row awaiting the resolution of final appeals on all sentences.

Under Japanese law, executions cannot take place until all related appeals have been exhausted, which happened in January, The death penalty is only used for serious cases of murder in Japan, and is carried out by hanging.
