Liquid Water on Mars?

Liquid water 'lake' revealed on Mars

What they believe to be a lake sits under the planet's south polar ice cap, and is about 20km (12 miles) across.

The result is exciting because scientists have long searched for signs of present-day liquid water on Mars, but these have come up empty or yielded ambiguous findings. It will also interest those studying the possibilities for life beyond Earth - though it does not yet raise the stakes in the search for biology.
The discovery was made using Marsis, a radar instrument on board the European Space Agency's (Esa) Mars Express orbiter.

Few people understand that the problem of water on mars isn't just finding some. It is the the fact that there aren't many places on mars where liquid water can even exist. Liquid water requires a particular range of temperatures and pressures. On most of the surface the pressure is so low that ice transitions directly to the gaseous form with no liquid phase in between. The only place on the surface is the hellas basin and even then it isn't all the year round. Thus it isn't terribly surprising that they found a body of water on mars underground. They were probably looking for it, because that is where any liquid water would have to be.
