Hurricane Florence seen from space

Hurricane Florence has been re-classified as a Category 4 tropical storm and is heading for the US east coast with a likely landfall around the cusp of Thursday/Friday.

A mandatory evacuation order takes effect Tuesday at noon in eight counties along South Carolina's 187-mile coastline. Starting then, all roads on I-26 and Route 501 will be directed away from the coast, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said.

A mandatory evacuation order was issued noon Monday for North Carolina's Hatteras Island. Dare County Emergency Management officials said they'll extend the order to all residents and visitors in other areas beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Current predictions suggest the 140mph storm may make landfall between Charleston and Cape Hatteras.

Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) has released documents showing that the Trump administration secretly siphoned $9.8million from the FEMA emergency response and recovery budgets, and transferred the money into the department of Homeland Security budgets to fund ICE's ongoing program of building migrant detention centres for children near the Mexican border.

This reallocation of funds took place in June (right when the hurricane season normally begins), and has come to light just as hurricane Florence, which is on the cusp of becoming a Category 5 tropical storm, is barrelling in towards the east coast of USA.

As for all the loyal Trump supporters in Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia who are facing the prospect of 157mph winds and up to 40 inches of rain in the next few days, and who might be wondering where the emergency FEMA aid crews have gone - perhaps they can try prayer instead ?

CNN are reporting that six nuclear power plants lie in the path of of hurricane Florence when it makes landfall on Thursday in the Carolinas

The six nuclear power plants in North and South Carolina sit directly in the storm's projected path, according to Mary Catherine Green, spokeswoman for Duke Energy, which owns all six.

Duke's Brunswick Nuclear Plant and its Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant near Raleigh, both in North Carolina, are the closest to where the hurricane is forecast to make landfall, Green said.

In a press briefing, Jeff Byard, associate administrator for the FEMA Office of Response and Recovery, said the agency was not concerned about the power plants in the storm's path "at this time."

However, The Union of Concerned Scientists, a science-oriented public policy organization, is concerned about the Brunswick plant's ability to withstand the storm, because of what the group says is a lack of publicly available information about the plant's readiness. According to the group, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has not released public information validating that the plant has been properly updated to protect against flooding.

The Brunswick Nuclear Power plant near Southport North Carolina has 2 x 938/920 MW General Electric Company BWR (boiling water reactors), and the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant near Raleigh is a 1x 928 MW Westinghouse PWR (pressurised water reactor).

A new follow-up report by Rachel Maddow of MSNBC indicates that the Trump administration also siphoned $29million from the US Coastguard budget and quietly switched it into funding ICE's ramped up program of migrant incarceration and deportations.

CNN report that up to $200million has been reallocated over the summer within DHS budgets towards funding ICE (Immigration Control Enforcement).

The money came from different parts of DHS, including FEMA, the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office, Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers, Coast Guard, Transportation Security Administration, cybersecurity office and Customs and Border Protection.
