Trump Brings Down The House

There was laughter in the back of the theater, leading to the belief
that someone was telling jokes back there.” (George S. Kaufman - NYT review of a Broadway comedy)

Donald Trump turned up at the UN today and gave the sort of speech he normally delivers at his tent-show MAGA rallies and red-hat Medicine shows. It didn’t go down quite as well as he might have hoped:

Diplomats and heads of state from all over the world laughed at President Donald Trump’s boast that he has “accomplished more than any administration in the history of our country.” At the podium of the United Nations General Assembly, Trump took it on the nose – “Didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s OK” – and then sleepily delivered a bellicose, 35-minute presentation of international cooperation as a threat to America.

In between praising the Trump-coaxing regime of Saudi Arabia, Trump attacked OPEC as “ripping off the rest of the world” before demanding protection money: “We want them to start lowering [oil] prices, and they must contribute substantially to military protection from now on.”

As long previewed by Trump aides, the president delivered another hostile address to the “corrupt dictatorship in Iran,” which Trump’s attorney winks at overthrowing despite official denials. Trump didn’t make demands of Iran, instead rattling off Iranian bellicosity and urging a world Trump spent the rest of the speech denigrating to join in the U.S. “campaign of economic pressure” and isolation.

In a defiant address to the United Nations General Assembly, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani subsequently paid back every bit of Trump’s earlier invective against Iran with interest.
It is unfortunate that we are witnessing rulers in the world who think they can secure their interests better, or at least in the short term ride public sentiments and gain popular support through the fomenting of extremist nationalism and racism and through xenophobic tendencies resembling a Nazi disposition,” Rouhani said at the beginning of his 25-minute speech.

This was hours after Trump called Rouhani “an absolutely lovely man” in an early-morning tweet. And it was a message to Trump not to bother reprising the threaten-and-flatter approach with Iran that he used on North Korea.
