Iceberg Monolith Spotted in Antartica

Tabular iceberg - Larden C ice shelf

A bizarre iceberg has been spotted by NASA scientists - in the shape of a near-perfect rectangle.

The oddly satisfying phenomenon was discovered near the Larden C ice shelf in the Antarctic Peninsula.

A photo shows a thick block of ice up to a mile long dramatically protruding from a sea of thin frozen water, thought to have recently splintered off.

A NASA ice scientist Kelly Brunt explained the process that caused it is fairly common resulting in what is known as a 'Tabular' iceberg. Prismatic and triangular ones are not uncommon as well. Only about 10% of the iceberg is visible above water.

Arthur C. Clarke fans will be wondering if the proportions of this latest monolith might happen to be 1.4.9.

My thought when i first saw this news earlier today was that it's just going to fuel NASA denier conspiracy theorists.

Another picture of the iceberg with some more information.

There is also an aerial film clip showing a number of other icebergs in strikingly regular geometrical forms. At first glance they do look rather like the sort of landscapes seen in video games that are created with the help of a fractal generator. But then again that's what they really are in a sense - fractal generated forms.

Snow crystals are fractal forms. The novella "The Curve Of The Snowflake" (1956) written by cyberneticist William Grey Walter was inspired by the Von Koch 'Snowflake Curve' which predated Mandelbrot's work by several decades.

Sometimes nature really does favour straight lines.

I finally looked up to find the video. What the pilot says is confusing because he is not talking about the rectangular chunk and it bothers me that that's what the news media went with is the stupid rectangular shaped piece.

Thumbs up Zetrique! It's refreshing to get balanced reports in anything.
