Colonel General Igor Korobov, the head of Russia’s military intelligence agency known as the GRU, has died according to Russian sources.

The obituary published by Russian state media says that Korobov 62, died from the effects of a very serious and long standing illness, which oddly enough didn’t prevent him from visiting the USA as part of a high level delegation, and holding controversial closed-door meetings with Mike Pompeo then head of the CIA in early February this year.

Korobov’s illness appears to have taken a turn for the worse a couple of months ago when he received a severe and public reprimand from Russian president Vladimir Putin after a series of bungled GRU operations in Europe. These included the Novichok poisonings in Salisbury UK which were linked by British security surveillance to a pair of GRU operatives, and the identification of another four GRU agents in the Netherlands who were detected trying to infiltrate a scientific establishment that specialises in monitoring chemical weapons and toxins.

By a curious coincidence, Korobov’s demise occurred at the point where another GRU agent Maria Butina who has been under arrest in the USA by the FBI was in the process of completing a plea deal with Federal prosecutors who are examining her clandestine relationships to the GRU, the NRA, and senior members of the GOP.

Igor Korobov had been in charge of the GRU since the earlier part of 2016.
