Surreal Science Articles

Thought I'd kick off a thread for people to link science articles that contain a healthy dose of irony, scientific surrealism, or even just some thought provoking "yeah, but ..." style humor.

==quote from Science 2.0==
A nicotine metabolite once thought to be inactive, cotinine, instead supports learning and memory, by amplifying the action of a primary chemical messenger [acetylcholine] involved in both, finds a new study.

The new findings indicate cotinine makes brain receptors more sensitive to lower levels of the messenger acetylcholine, ... and may boost effectiveness, at least for a time, of existing therapies for Alzheimer's and possibly other memory and psychiatric disorders.

The neurotransmitter acetylcholine is produced by cholinergic neurons, a target in diseases such as Alzheimer's. The first sign of damage is these brain cells start pulling back the axons that connect them, then they die, Terry said. Most Alzheimer's drugs, including the widely used Aricept, or donepezil, help patients maintain higher levels of acetylcholine longer by blocking an enzyme that breaks it down.
...
...
The body doesn't make nicotine or cotinine but when the body is exposed to nicotine, the liver converts it to less noxious metabolites, primarily cotinine, that can be easily eliminated in the urine. That is why insurance physicals often include a urine test for cotinine to verify if a potential client is a non-smoker.
==endquote==

Interesting stuff! http://www.science20.com/news_articles/ ... ory-153308

I notice that cotinine is an ANAGRAM of nicotine---you just switch the letters around. That must be how they got the idea what to call it. In the liver one gets converted into the other, so they must be closely related chemicals.

As long as the robot understands 'go away,' I'm fine with it. I enjoy the hunt, in a place like that. As a way to attract customers, it may work at least for a while due to the novelty. 'Let's go to Lowe's and talk to a robot.'

Or, yeah, try to screw with it. "Norman, everything I say is a lie..."

On a more practical note, there will have to be a lot of amusing and mood altering housekeeping etiquitte that will be needed ... such as post coital FOD patrol {fluids}, intimate vaccuming, and telltale air filtration. It'd be virtually impossible to be discreet about it too, so EVERYONE will know, everytime, and with whom ... and not just the crew, but NASA. Talk about a weird vibe in a very small world.

However, the first event will probably be pay per view worthy. ;^)

I should probably stop here, in the interest of keeping this PG-13.

We now have proof that the majority of the world's biomass of ambulatory lifeforms are lefty.

This is surely a sign that the Almighty himself is left handed, and that we sinistrals should rise up and destroy the debased dextrals of the world. We lefties are the only people in our right minds, and it is therefore up to us to make everything right with the world.

Ok, you both got me curious..

Given the Space Station and I'm assuming occupancy there has been both sexes overlapping.. why should I believe none of them have tried sex there yet?

If not.. will that couple become famous? If already.. why aren't they already famous? First copulation in outer space seems like it would be a big deal.. as firsts go.

Or even Homosexual Sex.. Masturbation is homosexual (same-sex) behavior.. right?

"Mission Control to Astronaut Johnson.. we are seeing an unusual increase in your blood pressure and body temperature.. is everything ok there?"

Dave :^)

Masturbation is homosexual ... right?

I think the vast majority of heterosexuals would disagree on that count, Dave. To borrow a bit of British jargon, being a wanker is not the same as being a poof (song lyrics NSFW).

Onlookers: No flames please ... just a short digression on idiomatic etymology. Back on topic.

Hi Darby,

Of course heterosexuals can BELIEVE having sex alone with themselves is not same-sex behavior. They might lose some sleep otherwise..lol.

Best wishes,
Dave :^)

Ants are a majority of the world's biomass....a fact to be contemplating while on a picnic. Though I am not convinced that simply bearing leftward makes you a lefty. I am a left-hander, and often veer right to exit the study. Otherwise, I keep colliding with walls and furniture. I will ruminate over this while being gauche at the local lefty tavern, a place called Bar Sinister.

I've always daydreamed of liquidating righties, but it never occured to me to accomplish said liquidation by serving liquids in an actual Bar. Clever. Blindingly obvious, actually. Profitable too.

Heh! Delightful - I feel full of watts and vinegar, just reading about it.

In Victorian times, "spend a penny" was a euphemism for taking a piss. Perhaps new euphemisms, if needed, may be developed from this. "Excuse me, I have to go charge a battery." or "Excuse me, I have to go turn on the juice."

In my household, the expression was "I gotta go pay a penny", and referred to the old fashioned pay toilets in some urban cities that actually charged a penny ... that was before my time, granted, but the saying was still sorta current when I was a kid, even though the last vestiges of the expression are finally dying out now.

Just some ordinary Science news, from the Google aggregator page, but this morning it struck me as so surreal I wanted to add it to this thread.
http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencen ... story.html
==quote==
As long as seven years after getting a 12-week course of Omega-3 fatty acid supplements, new research has found that young people at very high risk of developing schizophrenia were much less likely than those who did not get the supplements to develop full-blown psychosis, or to manifest a range of psychiatric disorders that commonly afflict such young adults.

The new research is the first to document rigorously the impact of fish oil supplements as a means of preventing severe psychiatric disease. The apparent effects of a brief regimen of fish oil capsules were both lasting and far-ranging in a population of young adults whose mental health is fragile.

Published this week in Nature Communications, the latest study adds further luster to fish oil's reputation as potentially powerful psychiatric therapy. Omega-3 fatty acids--found plentifully in fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel but also available in fish oil capsules--have long been shown to boost the effectiveness of antidepressants and to improve attention both in those with ADHD and those without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

In the young and cognitively healthy, fish oil supplementation has been found to improve working memory performance as well.
==endquote==
On the whole I think of Nature as a reputable publication/online outlet. Seems far-fetched.

Also this, genetic modification used to make dangerous drugs? Just a future possibility:
http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencen ... story.html

Maybe this is garbage research, bad science, how could this be right? Playing tetris helps control cravings.
Like, play tetris to lose weight/:
