Riyadh - Saudi Arabia

A loud explosion has been heard near Riyadh's King Khalid airport (just north of Riyadh), with unconfirmed reports saying Saudi Arabia intercepted a ballistic missile from Yemen.

Saudi air defence forces were quoted by broadcaster Al-Arabiya (based in Dubai) as saying they intercepted the missile north-east of the capital.

A TV channel linked to Houthi rebels in Yemen said the missile was launched at the airport.
Saudi forces have reported shooting down Houthi missiles before.

It is unclear if any damage was caused or if there have been any casualties.

Yemen has been devastated by a war between forces loyal to the internationally-recognised government of President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi and those allied to the Houthi rebel movement.

Saudi Arabia is leading a campaign to defeat the Houthis.

Burkhan-2H Scud Missile With 800 Km Range

The Al Jazeera website have published a more detailed report based on claims televised on the Al Masirah TV network which is run by the Iran backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The rebels claim to have fired a long-range Burkhan 2H missile at Riyadh airport in retaliation for bombing raids by the Saudi airforce in Yemen which they say killed civilians and children.

The rebels deny claims by the Saudis who say they shot down the missile with a US Patriot missile defence system.

Videos on social media showed smoke rising from an area near Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport.
