For the past three years Mr Saakashvili has lived in exile after being befriended by President Poroshenko of Ukraine. Saakashvili was even made governor of the Odessa region in 2015 as a mark of favour, but the two men subsequently fell out in a spectacular way with each accusing the other of corruption.

Mr. Saakashvili led a rally called ‘March For Impeachment’ on Sunday which called for a ‘Peoples Impeachment’ and the removal of President Poroshenko. The march drew only 3000 people which is small by Ukrainian standards, but President Porosheno had clearly had enough and sent armed officers from the Prosecutor's office to arrest Mr Saakashvili early this morning.

The erratic former President of Georgia had already fled from Ukraine to Poland once before after being stripped of his adoptive Ukrainian citizenship in May 2017. He only recently re-entered Ukraine illegally after he and his supporters manged to force their way past a border control post.

The Ukrainian Security Service later confirmed that he was being questioned in connection with article 256 of the Ukrainian Criminal code - “for assisting members of a criminal group and providing cover for their criminal activity”.
