“Lordy There Are Tapes” - (Rather A Lot Of Them)

Postby toucana on August 9th, 2018, 6:18 am

August 8th was the 44th anniversary of the resignation of president Richard Nixon in 1974. The day began badly for the current incumbent Donald Trump with news that former aide Omarosa Manigault-Newman has made a number of covert audio recordings of conversations with him in the White House which she plans to release with her new tell-all book Unhinged which claims that he is not only corrupt, but senile as well.

The day became much worse when another set of audio recordings were disclosed by MSNBC on the Rachel Maddow show last night. The recordings are of conversations between congressman Devin Nunes (R-Ca), the chair of the house Intelligence committee, in conversation with high-profile GOP donors at a private fund-raiser in Spokane Washington for Republican Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers held last Monday 30th July.

Devin Nunes admits that he and other congressional rightwingers have been conspiring to try and protect Donald Trump by impeaching DAG Rod Rosenstein as a way of firing Special counsel Robert Mueller and shutting down the Russia investigation:
If Sessions won’t unrecuse, and Mueller won’t clear the president, we’re the only ones. Which is really the danger..we have to keep all these seats. We have to keep the majority. If we do not keep the majority, all of this goes away.

Nunes is heard on tape lamenting that their recent attempt on 25th July to impeach Rod Rosenstein failed in part because the GOP ran afoul of their own equally compelling wish not to impede the Senate confirmation hearings to appoint Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court in time to protect Donald Trump against any subpoenas or indictment attempts from Congress that might be incoming.
The Senate would have to drop everything they're doing ... and start with impeachment on Rosenstein. And then take the risk of not getting Kavanaugh confirmed," Nunes said. "So it's not a matter that any of us like Rosenstein. It's a matter of, it's a matter of timing."

Nunes also appeared to say that if a campaign received and released stolen emails from a foreign government — he used a hypothetical example of McMorris Rodgers getting secret information from Portugal, where his ancestors are from — there would be a criminal element to that.
"But ultimately let's say the Portuguese came and brought her some stolen emails. And she decided to release those. Okay, now we have a problem, right?” Nunes said. "Because somebody stole the emails, gave 'em to Cathy, Cathy released 'em. Well, if that's the case, then that's criminal."

Devin Nunes has probably just helped to send Donald Trump Jnr. to prison with that one obiter dictum.
