Trump Thinks His ‘Flat One’ Is Getting Bent

Postby toucana on August 29th, 2018, 1:54 am

Another morning, another presidential Twitter tirade to contend with. Apparently President Donald Trump Googled “Trump News” earlier today and found the results to be very biased.

Google search results for “Trump News” shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake News Media. In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD. Fake CNN is prominent. Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal? 96% of....
....results on “Trump News” are from National Left-Wing Media, very dangerous. Google & others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good. They are controlling what we can & cannot see. This is a very serious situation-will be addressed! - (Trump Twitter feed)

As Maggie Haberman of the New York Times recently noted, Trump does not use a computer himself, meaning a staffer must have Googled on his behalf. ABC News reporter Tara Palmeri, who also covers the White House, further explained that Trump sometimes reads on an iPad, which he refers to as “the flat one.”

Other journalists have pointed out that if the president really is Googling the phrase “Trump News” within quotation marks, then he probably doesn’t really know how to use Google in the first place because he is using a literal rather than a generic phrase as a search term. He also appears to be rather unobservant as well, because running a Google search on Trump News (sans quotes) does normally produce links to Fox News on the very first page of search results.

Trump's claim appears to be based on a recent blog post on the conservative site, PJ Media.

The PJ Media post, which makes statements like "Social Media Companies the Most Dangerous Monopolies Ever," in turn, relies on a "media bias chart" by Sharyl Attkisson.

Attkisson, formerly a reporter with CBS News, currently works for conservative news conglomerate Sinclair Broadcast Group. While she has authored noteworthy journalism, Attkisson also has a years-long history of reaching questionable conclusions, including suggesting that there is a link between autism and vaccines.

Google who usually keep details of the inner workings of their famous ‘Page rank’ algorithm under close wraps have released this statement:
“Search is not used to set a political agenda and we don’t bias our results toward any political ideology. Every year, we issue hundreds of improvements to our algorithms to ensure they surface high-quality content in response to users’ queries. We continually work to improve Google Search and we never rank search results to manipulate political sentiment.”
(Google Press Release)

Trump’s ire may conceivably have been triggered by current top Google search results on “Trump News” such as this one:
