Meng Hongwei the current president of Interpol has gone missing after going back from France to China for a meeting.

His wife Grace Meng told reporters in Lyons that her husband who was also a vice minister of public security in China had apparently been detained shortly after flying into China. She showed reporters a message she received on her mobile phone at 12:26 on Tuesday 25 September which says 等 我 电 (“Wait for my call”), followed by an emoji image of a knife sent four minutes later. She believes that her husband was trying to warn her that he was in danger.

Interpol’s general secretariat say they received a brief message from Mr Meng on Sunday tendering his resignation as president of Interpol. They have issued a statement saying
"Interpol has requested through official law enforcement channels clarification from China's authorities on the status of Interpol's president Meng Hongwei.

"Interpol's general secretariat looks forward to an official response from China's authorities to address concerns over the president's well-being."

Meanwhile authorities in China have said the Interpol president is under investigation on suspicion of breaking the law. The Communist Party's corruption unit said Mr Meng, who is also China's vice minister of public security, is "suspected of violating the law and is currently under the monitoring and investigation" of the body.

The likeliest explanation is that Meng Hongwei has fallen victim to the latest wave of anti-corruption probes ordered by the Chinese president Xi Jinping which recently led to the arrest of Hollywood actress and X-men star Fan Bingbing in July on tax evasion charges.
