President Trump announced via Twitter on Saturday that his Interior secretary Ryan Zinke will be leaving the administration at the end of the year (i.e. within a fortnight) less than two years after the former congressman from Montana first rode into Washington DC dressed as a cowboy astride a horse called Tonto.

Trump paid tribute to Zinke on Twitter saying "Ryan has accomplished much during his tenure and I want to thank him for his service to our Nation" - which for once happens to be more or less true.

As Interior secretary, Zinke has already been the target of no fewer than 15 different ethics investigations into accusations of flagrant corruption, maladministration, influence trading and improper use of public money.

The Interior inspector general has multiple inquiries into the secretary, including the department's handling of a Connecticut casino project, whether the boundaries for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument were redrawn to benefit a state lawmaker, and conversations between Zinke and Halliburton Chairman David Lesar about a land development project in Zinke's hometown of Whitefish, Montana.

It would be an understatement to say that environmentalists and Democratic politicians were pleased to see Zinke go, and they quickly took to the internet to let him know it. In a tweet, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Zinke was “one of the most toxic members” of Trump’s cabinet. Rep Don Beyer (D-Va.)—an outspoken member of the House Natural Resources and Science committees—called Zinke’s time in office a “never-ending stream of terrible management decisions.” And the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental advocacy group, tweeted, “Don’t let your $139,000 door hit you on the way out, Zinke!”
