When in doubt, reach for a narwhal tusk

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/nov/30/narwhal-tusk-and-fire-extinguisher-used-to-tackle-london-bridge-attacker

In footage that has since emerged, Khan is sprayed with a fire extinguisher, while another man tries to suppress the assailant with a narwhal tusk – a long pointed tooth from a type of whale – lunging at him. It is believed the item was pulled from the wall of Fishmongers’ Hall, a grade II-listed building on London Bridge, by a Polish chef called Lucasz.

And hardline Brexiteers want to keep resourceful fellows like Lucasz OUT?

By chance I happen to have a photograph of myself talking to a guy dressed as a 16th century court jester holding a Narwahl tusk.

It would probably take too long to explain exactly why, but you can see that they are rather long and sharp !

Should be an Olympic sport.Reminds me of the nets vs swords * contests of the Gladiators in Rome.
* or was it spears?

Not to make unnecessary light of the appalling harm committed by that man who murdered 2 people and injured others.

Narwhal tusks were highly valued items back in the Elizabethan era of English history, partly because there was a popular fantasy that they came from the head of a unicorn rather than from a species of toothed whale (Monodon monoceros)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narwhal

The heliacal straight tusk was sometimes used as a hunting lance back in the 16th century. That in fact was the context of the photo I posted a link to, that was taken on a trip to Stirling castle in Scotland back in 2013.

The guy dressed as a court jester was a historical re-enactor and tour guide in the royal chambers who was explaining that a scene in the rich tapestries on the wall behind us showed a unicorn being killed by a party of hunters, one of whom was wielding a narwhal tusk hunting lance.

The Republican takeaway from all this, following the logic they bring to other issues of public safety, would not be to improve mental health services, or rehabilitation programs for prisoners, or review sentencing guidelines...it would be, rather, to make sure that narwhal tusks are readily available everywhere and, ideally, carried about by all citizens in situations where knife attacks are possible. Bumper stickers would be printed, "To stop a bad man with a knife, requires a good man with a narwhal tusk." A powerful lobbying organization, the NTA (National Tusk Association), would be formed and set about vigilantly blocking any laws that restricted the ownership of tusks or the right to carry them on one's person at all times.
