A Pakistan International Airlines Flight PK8303 en route from Lahore to Karachi crashed yesterday with the loss of at least 97 lives while attempting to land at Jinnah International Airport.

ATC transcripts and videos of the final approach indicate that the Airbus A320 airliner was on its second attempt at landing after aborting a previous overspeed landing attempt, and that it crashed shortly after declaring a Mayday with the pilot reporting both engines failed.

Photo enlargements from the final seconds appear to show that the undersides of both engine pods were damaged, and that the emergency RAT (ram air turbine) generator was deployed from the underside of the plane indicating a catastrophic loss of electrical power from both of the engine driven generators.

It would appear that the pilots had crash ‘bounced’ the A320 onto the runway during the initial approach and effectively wrecked both engines, before attempting to take off and go around again. It is thought that the landing gear may not have been correctly deployed, or was prematurely retracted during the initial landing attempt.

Aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan has told parliament that the pilots were distracted by a cockpit discussion between themselves about the global pandemic.

The pilots missed the TOD (top of descent) point on their approach and were coming in too high and fast, which led to a discussion with ATC staff who suggested a go-around, but were ignored.

The flight data shows that the landing gear was lowered at 10 nautical miles out but then inexplicably raised again five nautical miles from the runway, which Mr Khan described as “beyond comprehension”.

Several warnings and alerts such as over-speed, landing gear not down, and ground proximity alerts were disregarded according to the report.

CCTV footage shows the plane skating down the runway with its wheels up amid a shower of sparks on its first landing attempt. The crew took off again and attempted to make a second landing with the landing gear down, but the engines which had been severely damaged both failed completely at 2000’, and the plane crashed in half a mile short of the runway with the loss of 97 lives.
