Politico reports that vice president Mike Pence plans to leave the country and go abroad immediately after formalising Joe Biden’s presidential victory in Congress on 6 January 2021.

A vice-president doesn’t normally have that many tasks to perform during their term of office, but one of them happens to be that of presiding over the session of Congress that will formally ratify the votes already cast by the electoral college, and confirm Joe Biden as the president-elect who will then be formally sworn in at an inauguration ceremony exactly two weeks later.
Pence is apparently not looking forward to facing the wrath of the GOP in general, and of outgoing president Trump in particular after performing these obsequies over the ashes of the Trump presidency.
Though Pence’s aides have declined to confirm details of this trip, other official documents and foreign media reports suggest that the vice president is due to travel to Bahrain, Israel and Poland - with the possibility of yet more stops being added.
No doubt Timbuctoo and Ultima Thule could be added as well if necessary.
“I suspect the timing is anything but coincidental,” one Pence ally said of his tentative travel plans.
