Odal rune stage design - CPAC conference stage 2021
The annual conservative CPAC conference for far-right Republican politicians and their sponsors which has just opened at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando Florida has drawn immediate criticism for its explicit use of a well-known Nazi symbol as the motif of its conference stage design.

The symbol in question known variously as the Odal/Othala rune is an ancient epigraphic symbol from the Elder Futhark alphabet which was in use from about 100CE to 650CE. It fell out of use in both the Scandanavian and Germanic record after that time, though it lingered in the Anglo Saxon manuscript tradition for a while as a rune for writing the œ phoneme.
The Odal rune remained forgotten until the 1930s when it was revived by the German Nazi party as part of its general affectation for Heathenery and Neo-Paganism. The Odal rune was explicitly adopted by the 7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division Prinz Eugen which operated in the Nazi puppet state of Croatia. This unit used the Odal rune on their flag in place of the swastika during WW2

The use of this rune was revived by the Afrikaner Student Federation and the far-right wing White Liberation Movement, which was so violent that even the racist South African Apartheid regime banned it in 1988.
In November 2016, the leadership of the American neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement announced their intention to replace the Nazi pattern swastika with the Odal rune on their uniforms and parrty regalia in an attempt to enter mainstream politics.

The use of the Odal rune as the 2021 CPAC conference stage design suggests that they are making some headway.
