Re: Math Quotes

"It is better to solve one problem five different ways, than to solve
five problems one way. "

I strongly doubt this... there is nothing more productive in science than to find one solution which solves five different problems.

Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical idea.

Re: Math Quotes

Anyone can claim to do science. Math is the proof it is done correctly.

Re: Math Quotes

“Physics is to math what sex is to masturbation.”
Richard Feynman
“Why nature is mathematical is, again, a mystery.”
Richard Feynman
===================================

a)  Let to take physics as a stone.
Then only making sex with math it is possible to create the beautiful
living planet  Earth.
b) Let to take math as an idea.
Then pure math for pure math is an abstract image - masturbation.
Only married with physics they both can create the paradise planet Earth.

And if somebody cannot happily live on this  paradise  planet Earth -
- then it is his/her own problem.

Questions:
a) where does stone come from ?
b) where does idea come from?
They both come from an infinite void, from an emptiness, from a nothingness,
from the  zero vacuum continuum : T=0K.

Nonsense, of course. Many currently-accepted mathematical theories were thought ugly at the beginning. Consider set theory and the infinitesimal calculus. Newton's theory of gravity is beautiful but hopelessly wrong.

I cannot imagine why anybody would believe this for a moment. The history of science is replete with accounts of how one inspired insight has solved innumerable problems (Cantor's set theory of numbers, or the Watson-Crick model in genetics, for example). Why on earth would you need five different ways to solve one problem? It offends against the principle of Occam's Razor.

In mathematics the art of proposing a question must
be held of higher value than solving it.

– Georg Cantor

Although to penetrate into the intimate mysteries of
nature and thence to learn the true causes of phenomena
is not allowed to us, nevertheless it can happen that
a certain fictive hypothesis may suffice for explaining
many phenomena.

– Leonhard Euler

It is the first duty of a hypothesis to be intelligible.

– Thomas Henry Huxley

Love T H Huxley's remark. Quintessentially English. "My dear chap, are you SURE that makes any sense?"

Also Georg Cantor. The challenge is to know what question to ask. After it's been asked, sooner or later, even a chimp with a typewriter will happen on the right answer.
