Physics Experiment List

Postby Nick on April 2nd, 2009, 9:00 pm

This topic is going to be for a list of physics experiments past and present. Each experiment should have a brief description including current status and key results and relevant links. The projects will be organised, at least initially, by area of physics in separate posts. If you would like to add an experiment to the list please reply to the topic. Your contributions will then be added into the existing posts or a new post created if the experiment is in an as yet uncovered area of physics and you will be acknowledged for your contribution. Discussion on the organisation of the topic would also be welcome, as would experiments to add to the list even if descriptions are not given.

Particle Physics - Colliders

Postby Nick on April 2nd, 2009, 9:07 pm

LHC
The Large Hadron Collider is a proton - proton collider at CERN, near Geneva. Built inside the 27km circumference tunnel that used to house LEP the LHC is a 14TeV centre of mass collider with a design luminosity of 1034 cm-2 s-1. The LHC saw first beam in September 2008 but shortly later suffered a technical failure that delayed the first collisions which are expected in September 2009.

Current Status:
Having diagnosed the electrical fault that lead to the delay the magnets from sectors 5-7 are being cooled down and tested for re-installation. The status can be found at http://lhc.web.cern.ch/lhc/ .

ALICE
A Large Ion Collider Experiment is one of the LHC dectors...

Hi,

Not sure if you are asking for anyone to post ideas for experiments here?

Let me know if it`s ok and I will give details.

This topic is to list actual experiments that have been, are being or are likely to be run. One day I'll get round to populating the topic properly, but it's low on my priorities.

Unfortunately, mishka, there's no such thing. The Philadelphia experiment is an urban legend.

Given the many chats going on in regard to the reality of QM, and the role of the observer, I thought it might be good to have a link to a video where someone (Anton Zeilinger) is actually doing a double slit experiment. With buckyballs!

(I don't have audio here, so I can't speak to the quality of the narration, but I'm not sure you really need it here...)
