Apparently, the sugar industry paid off Harvard researchers to downplay the risk of sugar in heart disease, and focus on fats as the cause back in the 1960's.

We are just now emerging from this line of thinking into realizing fats are not so bad - quite insane.

What you exhale won't kill you.

This rule of thumb (referencing metabolic CO2) is a reminder to balance calories in with calories out. There's quite a bit of leeway within that "diet".

Certainly if you are in an airtight room - what you exhale could kill you! I believe Calories in/Calories out is also a slogan created by the sugar industry :D

The untimely death of Tom Petty, last Oct. 2, had me reflecting on heart health and how a serious condition can sneak up on a person. This article clarifies the difference between cardiac arrest (what killed Petty) and a heart attack. The first is primarily electrical, the second is plumbing.

Seeing segments of Petty's last concert at the Hollywood Bowl, just a week before he died, it struck me how "okay" he looked then. He looked reasonably fit for a 66 year old man, and projected his usual vitality and ease as a performer. Like me and a lot of other guys, he probably wasn't the type to go to a doctor unless he really felt like s--t. Makes you think.

I can't say that I'm familiar with 'heart failure' as an acute electrical failure of heart action, but I am familiar with heart attacks in the form of angina attacks.

On the role of a high sugar diet as a precursor, I'm not sure. I had a sweet tooth until I was in my 70s and was diagnosed with diabetes 2 after identifying glycosuria. Metformin and the dietary change controlled that.

Subsequent to this in 2005 I experienced my first bouts of angina. Angiograms revealed almost complete stenosis of the right descending coronary artery from atherosclerosis. The following graphics are before and after stenting.

The irregular outlines of the arteries from atherosclerosis are clearly discernible.

About 4 years ago, while I was on crutches because of advanced peripheral arterial disease of the legs, I was getting mild anginas again most times I began to perform exercise, including using an exercise bike because I could not walk more than a few hundred metres even with crutches. The mild anginas would wear off after 30 seconds or so of rest and I would continue my bike exercise at a low torque and rpm.

Since taking vitamin K, my anginas have ceased; I use much higher torques when I use the exercise bike, but I can pull weights at the gym to the point of running out of puff without getting anginas. that's apart from now walking 2 to 5 kilometres a day, improving glomerular filtration rate, functional reversal of osteoarthritis, and absence of lower back pain.

In my book 'Vitamin K or a Wheelchair', I've demonstrated a reversal of atherosclerosis following the use of vitamin K, as well as reviewing the literature of how the vitamin K-dependent protein -- protein C counteracts each biochemical stage in the formation of atheromas and how the vitamin K-dependent protein osteocalcin prevents their calcification.

I do not restrict the fat in my diet since the November 2017 article in Lancet suggested a higher longevity is associated with a higher percentage of dietary fat in 130,000 people in 18 countries on 5 continents.

Anecdotal report:

I've removed refined sugar from my diet a few weeks ago (also high-sugar fruits like raisins and figs) and noticed an increase in stamina, less afternoon fatigue, and an improved level of alertness and mental focus in the morning. I took some pains not to alter my diet or habits in any other way. I still eat one date bar, most days, which adds antioxidants and fiber to the diet and is slow-digesting enough that it seems not to pose glucose spike problems.

I remain a fan of that classic and timeless health food: the apple. With this no-sucrose diet, apples now taste sweet enough to stand alone as a dessert.

No, we didn't. Most of our ancestors who died young fell victim to trauma, not mechanical failure. The machine was built to keep operating for a century if it's properly maintained.
Proper maintenance includes hard-to-get food: little hard, crabby apples, not the latest hybrid, grains with husks on, yams you have to dig up and beat up before you get any and lean meat, because wild boars never get a chance to grow bacon.
The more convenient and palatable we make food, the less it's good for our bodies.
The sugar industry wants to blame it on fat; the meat industry wants to blame it on starch; the cereal industry wants to blame it on processed cheese; the dairy industry wants to blame it on salt.
They're all to blame: food shouldn't be industrial.
