Restoring Hearing?

A new method of gene delivery to hair cells in the inner ear restores some level of hearing and improves balance of mice who were born with no hearing or have acquired deafness later. Maybe from mice to humans?

In the future, certainly from mice to humans.
Still, a number of problems remain to be faced.
Current research is still stuck on using viruses to deliver genes to cells in the living organism.
Although you may now be able to target viruses quite precisely to a certain population of cells, and you might modify the virus so that it does infect the target cells but it cannot replicate, leave these cells and infect other tissues, still we are talking about viruses, and nobody feels so well-at-ease with this approach.
Possible unexpected consequences may arise in using these approaches in humans.
They are being tried, in pilote studies, but concern still remains high.
