Plant stems - cell division

Postby SimonZonenblick on September 20th, 2018, 11:23 am

Am I right in thinking that for the elongation of plant stems, cell division is required in the apical bud - or is it the cells of the apical meristem which divide? Further, whichever is correct,I have always believed that the cells are deposited downwards. The best analogy I heard was of someone sitting atop a pile of bricks, then producing another brick from their pocket which they placed beneath themselves, so that basically although the pile had lengthened they were still on the top, just as the terminal/apical part of the stem is always at the top. But recent videos I have seen of cell division show the new cells being pushed up above the current ones.
