The US was not founded on the Christian religion

Postby CanadysPeak on January 22nd, 2012, 11:15 am

Again this week, several Republicans evoked returning America to the Christian nation which the founding fathers intended. Yet, we have this pesky bit of evidence. In 1797, the US signed a treaty with the Bey of Tripoli. One might be interested in Article 11.

"Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."

If the fathers were Christian, then they were lying in the treaty, but that breaks the Commandment, so they weren't Christian. . .

We really should learn more history in this country, eh? By the way, Washington apparently wrote (or approved) those words and Adams signed them.

History is written by the victors.

That's why you've never read a history book written by lions. :)
