Famous Black and White works

Postby zetreque on February 15th, 2016, 6:21 pm

Can anyone in the art world direct me to the most well known black and white works of art?

I have an idea for an art study project dealing with black and white and maybe using metrics to look for underlying reasons why and what people like in black and white. Which might be a project for another lifetime since I am so busy in this one. :(

If memory serves me, there was a painting that the Canadian National Gallery bought for several million dollars from the widow of the artist. I think it was about a 4x4 foot canvas painted white with a thin vertical black line down the center of the canvas. If you can figure that out. Can you imagine the value of those dollar today, 20 some years later?

MC Escher comes to mind.

Some of Louise Nevelson's boxed spaces.

lots of artists have worked with ink, woodcuts, charcoal, lithography, etc.

Silhouettes? Used in both painting and architecture. Used to make a form and shadow effect. Used where formality is wanted. Just black and white.

Sorry that doesn't name particular artists but I'm thinking a search of "silhouettes" might bring up something.

Thank you all for the responses. This topic is on my radar going forward.
Black and White gives us a different perspective on the world and my idea is to explore that idea further in the 3D world.
I am a fan of color by far, but I like how this gives us a unique perspective. I am gaining a new appreciation for it suddenly.

I'm not sure about "famous" but wolfhnd treated us to a fantastic collection of pencil art, which is typically black and white. You'll be amazed!

I don't seem to be able to link to the wiki pages properly, but Picasso's Guernica (1937) and Malevich's Black Square, 1915 (or 1913) are two famous paintings. Are they the sort of thing you had in mind?

It wouldn't count among the most famous, but Don Van Vliet (aka. Captain Beefheart) debuted his visual art career with black and white paintings, claiming it gave the audience the opportunity to fill in the colours for themselves, in their minds.
