he is a great writer. My favorite novel is Nausea, very philosophycal and all. But, in fact, I prefer Houellebecq, called the first literary french superstar since Sartre. You should read Les Particules elementaires (i dont know whats the name in english, sorry!)

"Being and Nothingness" is purported to be his best. I couldn't force myself past page 60. actually the pain began almost on page 1. Jean Paul was a literary sadist. After I gave up on B&N, I was able to breeze through Hermann Hesse and Dostoyevsky like I was reading "the Little Prince". For philosophical works, you can't beat the plays of Shakespeare.

I said else where that it took me about 5 times reading B&N through to understand it, but I enjoyed every second of it. I was very casual about it. I suppose it would be torture if you actually felt you needed to get something out of it quicky for a practical reason.
