End guesswork ADHD drug

Children with ADHD who carry a specific type of dopamine receptor gene respond better to the drug methylphenidate (MPH) than those without the genotype, according to new research from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Sadly symptom-based definitions of psychological conditions seem to be the rule. We tend to treat people with common behavioral patterns identically even though the underlying reason may be completely different. This is too often the case with ADHD, bipolar disorder, and the like. This is a terrible way to base prescriptions. It may take research like this that highlights again (for the hundredth time) that the DRD4 gene variant should be considered something different than the condition that looks the same without the variant mutation.
