Yes, Mr. Oblad (Dave), your rendition of the quote AND SOURCE is as I always heard it too. 100%, and in this case I'm virtually certain my memory is correct, on this matter, knowing, as do you, that it isn't always. -d30

I always thought that was Samuel Clemens, but I'll take your word for it.

It's credited to Jaques Abbadie, 1684, in a theological work, then later quoted by Denis Diderot in his famous encyclopedia. Historians (am married to one) have found no evidence for the Lincoln attribution. By Lincoln's time, it was a well known adage, so no reason Abe couldn't have used it in a speech.

William Bruce Cameron instead of Albert Einstein. Cameron’s 1963 text “Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking” contained the following passage.

It would be nice if all of the data which sociologists require could be enumerated because then we could run them through IBM machines and draw charts as the economists do. However, not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.

All right. I just believe everything I read. :-)

I recently read an article about how someone quotes someone else without attribution and then gets credit as the original "author". So long as the quotes are good .......

"mhden agan" (nothing in excess) - inscribed in Temple of Apollo (Ancient Greece), date unknown, possibly as a reference to the guiding principle of the "Golden Mean" (moderation as one of the cornerstones of a virtuous life) by Aristotle in the 4th century B.C. Re-paraphrased by Roman dramatist Publius Terentius Afer (2nd century B.C.) in "Andria" as "Moderation in all things". And finally reparaphrased again by the illustrious Benjamin Franklin into my favorite version ... "Moderation in all things, including moderation."

I attribute this quote to sour diesel. (That is a strain of pot legal in this state.)

These quotes could help a lot of people:

All that we are is the result of what we have thought (Buddha)

Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you respond to it (Lou Holtz)

Welcome Alan,
I expect you are correct, but did you know Charles is credited with it as well. Saying it more often may lead to people thinking you said it first.

― Charles R. Swindoll

I think that must have lost something in the translation. Seems like dangerous might be a wrong word. I don't think such a pursuit to be dangerous. It's just life.

I think 'formidable' is a more appropriate word for translation. But that's just me.

One often ignored or even denied truth about telling truth is that it is much easier to tell the truth than to have others to believe what is told as the truth; this difficulty would in turn make it hard to even tell the truth at the first place simply because the potential truth teller would not be confident enough that he could convince the others to agree with him.

Yes you can, and it is likely your last chance to do so.

A fist full of whiskers in one hand, and handful of stick in the eye of the tiger, in the other. Loud vocalization in the language of your choice would be optional, but likely effective.
But, if your head is in the tiger's month, you didn't put up a very compelling discussion.
