3rd party stress causes brain changes apparently.

Postby Event Horizon on March 12th, 2018, 10:00 am

“Recent studies indicate that stress and emotions can be ‘contagious’. Whether this has lasting consequences for the brain is not known.”

Toni-Lee Sterley, Ph.D., a postdoctoral associate in Bains’ lab and the study’s lead author comments, “What was remarkable was that CRH neurons from the partners, who were not themselves exposed to an actual stress, showed changes that were identical to those we measured in the stressed mice.”

Apparently, we are affected by the stress of others, and even if were not affected by the stress directly what we pick up from others still changes the brain anyway.

Makes perfect sense in terms of whatshisnames' view of emotions being bodily felt. We can unconsciously pick up on certain body postures and subtle facial expressions. Given the effect of mirror neurons this all adds up and I would've be surprised to see the reverse result tbh.

Same here. This seems to reinforce what we know about humans as social animals and the role of empathy. It's also no surprise to anyone who's married. If the wife ain't happy, I ain't happy. If the wife is stressed, I'm stressed. I used to think my wife had a particular talent for transferring stress to me, but it's pretty much universal. (that is, universal to close human relationships....wasn't saying my wife can transfer stress to the entire universe....not yet, anyway....)

Like most other animals, a huge amount of communication is transmitted non-verbally. Reading body-language is essential for survival and instinctive for some people, police..soldiers.

Again, to use a military example, we know that fear is very contagious. Laughter too.

So if we go out and get mugged, when we get home we pass the fear on to our spouse or whatever. This in turn changes their brain too.

I live about 6000 miles from my fiancee at the moment Brainvat. I still get top quality, hi-grade stress at times. There is no escape! They told me there was light at the end of the tunnel. There was. It was the explosion sealing the exit!

Hehe. Yes. I've also heard the light at the end of the tunnel is the headlight of an oncoming train.
