The Odal Rune takes the stage at CPAC

Odal rune stage design - CPAC conference stage 2021

The annual conservative CPAC conference for far-right Republican politicians and their sponsors which has just opened at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando Florida has drawn immediate criticism for its explicit use of a well-known Nazi symbol as the motif of its conference stage design.

https://m.dailykos.com/stories/2021/2/26/2018354/-Why-the-Odal-Othala-Rune-Used-By-CPAC-is-100-Explicitly-a-Nazi-Symbol

The symbol in question known variously as the Odal/Othala rune is an ancient epigraphic symbol from the Elder Futhark alphabet which was in use from about 100CE to 650CE. It fell out of use in both the Scandanavian and Germanic record after that time, though it lingered in the Anglo Saxon manuscript tradition for a while as a rune for writing the œ phoneme.

The Odal rune remained forgotten until the 1930s when it was revived by the German Nazi party as part of its general affectation for Heathenery and Neo-Paganism. The Odal rune was explicitly adopted by the 7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division Prinz Eugen which operated in the Nazi puppet state of Croatia. This unit used the Odal rune on their flag in place of the swastika during WW2

The use of this rune was revived by the Afrikaner Student Federation and the far-right wing White Liberation Movement, which was so violent that even the racist South African Apartheid regime banned it in 1988.

In November 2016, the leadership of the American neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement announced their intention to replace the Nazi pattern swastika with the Odal rune on their uniforms and parrty regalia in an attempt to enter mainstream politics.

The use of the Odal rune as the 2021 CPAC conference stage design suggests that they are making some headway.

Thanks toucana for the post above.

OMG... I have never ever heard such a poor rendering of the National Anthem in my entire life. Is there something we don't know? Has she been deaf all her life and this is the best she can do?

If true, then kudo's for trying.

If not, whoever chose her to sing it, should be forced to hear this everyday for life. Then again, that person or persons are probably tone deaf too. Pick a key.. any key.. and then stick with it.

I would rather listen to somebody scraping their finger nails across a chalkboard than hear her version of that song again. I've heard better pitch control from feral cats in my alley.

Best to all,
Dave :^)

My best guess is that the singer’s IED (in-ear device) monitoring failed, depriving her of a click track and a pitch-pipe tone that she was expecting.

According to a website called Slipped Disk:
The singer’s name is Sailor Sabol. She’s a GOP member from Orlando, Florida, and she’s available for weddings, christenings and executions.

https://slippedisc.com/2021/02/why-are-conservatives-so-crap-at-singing/.

The same website has thoughtfully linked in another YouTube video in which a guitarist attempts to play along and harmonise the CPAC 2021 version of the National Anthem in real time with a musical stave transcription running below tracking the key changes.

YT also has a similar Rachmaninoff-style reharmonisation and piano score of this version of the ‘Star Mangled Banner’.

I know the Far Right cults need to be kept in view, so I feel a twinge of guilt saying I've taken a bit of a mental health break from watching the true believers and devotees of the Big Lie. That said, I plan to go back to higher alertness regarding the new wave of voter suppression efforts, which seem to reflect what is now the central tenet of conservatism: We won't improve our policy ideas, but we'll find ways to hinder the voting of people who know our ideas suck.

I hope the GOP will rune the day they started flirting and flashing their knickers at white supremacists.

In 1852 Karl Marx observed in his essay The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte:
Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historic facts and personages appear so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce”.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eighteenth_Brumaire_of_Louis_Bonaparte

Recent events at this neo-Nazi freak-show and cultural car crash strongly suggest that what some have called the ’Branch Trumpvidian Qool-Aid Cult’ are now well into the second term of this Marxist equation.

What's worrisome is the number of Americans unaware that they're in a farce. They think they're in a John Woo action film, when in fact they're in a Mel Brooks comedy. (the "f--- the poor" scene in History of the World, Part 1 comes to mind...)

Then there's American humorist Mark Twain: "History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes."

It would be remiss of me not to flag up this extraordinary piece of musical salvage by a Canadian composer and acappella harmony group. How on earth they did it I have no idea, but it rather neatly symbolises the work that lies ahead to sort out the chaos of the last four years.
